Thirteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week
(Aug. 8 through Aug. 14)
Date of Release: 08/15/05
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 13 people died in 13 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, August 8 through Sunday, August 14.
Of the 13 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in three of the crashes and eight of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of one of the victims is not known at this time. One of the fatalities was a pedestrian and one was riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
Two single fatality crashes were reported in Hardin County. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Boyd, Calloway, Carroll, Jefferson, Johnson, Letcher, Livingston, Madison, Montgomery, Mercer and Warren counties.
Through August 14, 2005, a total of 544* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 24 less than reported for this time period in 2004. Three hundred and seventeen of these 544 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
