Thirteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Jan. 23 through Jan. 29)

Date of News Release: 01/31/2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 13 people died in 12 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, through Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006.

Of the 12 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in one of the crashes and five of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seatbelt status of two of the fatalities is unknown at this time. Three of the victims were riding motorcycles and two were not wearing helmets.

One double fatality crash occurred in Hardin County. Two single fatality crashes occurred in Greenup County. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Calloway, Carter, Christian, Harlan, Hart, Laurel, Pike, Russell, and Warren counties.

Through Jan. 29, 2006, a total of 45* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 19 fewer than reported for this time period in 2005. Eighteen of these 45 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
