***UPDATE***
LEXINGTON, Ky. (February 28, 2023)— On Feb. 7 at approximately 5:04 p.m. EST, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was requested by the Lexington Police Department (LPD) to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Fayette County.
KSP’s Critical Incident Response Team has conducted all necessary interviews of vital witnesses and troopers involved. At this time, KSP is able to release findings from the preliminary investigation, which reveals LPD was responding to a report of a domestic violence on Lonan Court at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Feb. 7. Upon arriving to the residence, LDP was unable to make contact with the homeowner or any individuals inside. Later at approximately 5:00 p.m., LPD and Lexington Fire Department responded to the same residence after receiving a call that a vehicle had attempted to strike a pedestrian and had collided into the home.
Upon arrival to the scene, officers located the damaged vehicle in the driveway and attempted to make contact with the driver, 29-year old Lasielle White from Lexington, who was still in the vehicle with the doors locked and windows rolled up. Ms. White refused multiple verbal commands from officers to exit the vehicle and then attempted to flee from officers in the vehicle, striking a police cruiser and accelerating in the direction of firefighters. Officer Jordan Whitman, a 3-year veteran of LPD, discharged an agency-issued firearm striking White, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. White was ultimately taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
In accordance with LPD’s policies and procedures, Officer Whitman has placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
KSP has statewide jurisdiction and investigates officer-involved shootings throughout the Commonwealth as requested by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation. To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts gathered. Timelines to complete investigations vary based on the complexity of the case.
