KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Eleven Highway Deaths on Kentucky Roads Last Week (May 26 - 31)

Date of News Release: 06/01/09

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in eleven separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Tuesday, May 26 through Sunday, May 31, 2009.

All of the crashes involved motor vehicles and six of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Barren, Bourbon, Carter, Fayette (2), Harlan, Jefferson, Knott, Livingston (2), and Madison counties. Alcohol was a factor in two of the crashes.

Through May 31, preliminary statistics* indicate that 312 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2009. This is 13 more than reported for the same time period in 2008. There were 266 motor vehicle fatalities and 147 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Sixteen pedestrians have been killed. Twenty-five fatalities involved a motorcycle and five fatalities involved an ATV. A total of seventy-one fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
