Hindman, KY (February 9, 2023) – On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at approximately 6:36 P.M., Kentucky State Police, Post 13, Hazard, received a 911 call in reference to a female being located in the roadway on KY-550, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Troopers and medical personnel responded to the scene and transported the female to the hospital to be treated for her injuries. After a brief stand-off at the residence, Larry Calhoun, 70, of Garner, was taken into custody. Initial investigation indicates that the two were engaged in a verbal argument that turned physical when Calhoun retrieved a firearm and shot the victim.

Calhoun was transported and lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail. He was charged with one count of Assault 1st Degree. The female remains hospitalized, being treated for injuries sustained in the altercation. This incident remains under investigation by Detective Brandon Thomas.
