Pendleton, Ky. (May 27, 2018)— The Kentucky State Police are investigating an incident in which an improvised explosive device was discovered in a trash can located at the Pilot Truck Stop located at 205 Pendleton Road, Pendleton, KY 40055.
On Sunday, May 27, 2018 at 14:36 p.m. Kentucky State Police Post 5 Campbellsburg received a call from the Pilot truck stop located at 205 Pendleton Road, Pendleton, KY 40055 in Henry County. The caller, an employee at the truck stop stated they observed what appeared to be a six inch pipe bomb in one of the exterior trash cans of the store. Troopers from Post 5 were dispatched to the scene to evacuate the building and cordon off the surrounding area as a safety precaution. Lake Jericho Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene to assist with establishing a safety perimeter. The store was evacuated and the perimeter of the building was secured.
A KSP Hazardous Device Unit was requested by Post 5 and dispatched to the scene in order to examine the item and render it safe. The device was rendered safe at 5:34 p.m. Evidence pertaining to the device was collected and interviews were conducted of employees and witnesses. Surveillance footage was also collected for examination. The Pilot Truck Stop was reopened for business at 6:12 p.m. Roadways surrounding the Pilot Truck Stop remained opened during the incident.
KSP opened a case for “Use of Weapon of Mass Destruction” which is a Class C Felony. The investigation is ongoing with no current suspects identified as of yet.
KSP Post 5 was assisted on scene by the KSP Hazardous Device Unit, FBI Hazardous Device Unit, LMPD Hazardous Device Unit, Lake Jericho Fire Department, Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Henry County EMS.
