The event is free and open to anyone  who has taken out an active missing person’s report

CAMPBELLSBURG, Ky. (Aug. 5, 2018) –On Aug. 30, Kentucky State Police Post 5, in conjunction with The National Missing and Unidentified Person System (NamUs), is inviting the public to help law enforcement identify missing loved ones.

The event is free and open to anyone in the public who has taken out an active missing person’s report on a relative. The report itself may have originated from any agency within the nation as long as it is entered into National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and is still an active case. 

The following is a list of what KSP and NamUs is requesting from participants.

What participants should bring:

·         2 biological relatives of the missing person, with at least one being a maternal relative. Relatives are asked to provide a buccal swab on site for DNA purposes. There is no blood draw required.  

·         Police reports (must be an existing report on file in the NCIC database). Relatives do not have to have the physical report in their possession, but it is preferred. They must, at least, provide the active case number and the agency assigned to the case.  

·         Dental and/or body x-rays, medical records or vital statistic documents of the missing person

·         Photographs depicting any tattoos, birth marks, or scars of the missing person 

Once these items are collected and analyzed, they will be entered into the NamUs database Once in the database, they will be cross referenced with all existing entries within the NamUs system. If no matches are found when compared against the existing entries, they will remain in the database to compare against future entries. 

Kentucky State Police and NamUs hope this event will generate new leads for solving cases of missing persons. The ultimate goal is to bring closure to families and justice, when necessary and appropriate.
