MAYSVILLE, Ky. (May 26, 2023) – On March 15, 2023, Kentucky State Police (KSP), Post 8, Morehead was contacted by Mason County Sheriff Patrick Boggs for assistance with a death investigation that occurred on March 12, 2023.
Through the course of the investigation it was discovered that Officer Caleb Savage, with the Ripley (Ohio) Police Department, was attempting to locate a vehicle suspected to be involved in a property crime. Officer Savage observed a Dodge Charger being operated by Ryan Mitchell entering the bridge access ramp, entering into Kentucky. Officer Savage proceeded into Kentucky for approximately one mile before activating his emergency equipment to attempt to stop the vehicle, which subsequently failed to stop and a pursuit ensued onto KY 3056. After traveling approximately 2 miles on KY 3056, Mr. Mitchell lost control of his vehicle which left the roadway to the right side and resulted in a single-vehicle collision. Officer Savage continued on KY 3056 and returned to Ripley, Ohio.
As a result of the collision, Mr. Mitchell suffered life threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Mason County Coroner’s Office.
After an extensive investigation by K.S.P. Post 8 investigators, and with the assistance of the Mason County Sheriff’s Department, Maysville Police Department and the Commonwealth Attorney’s office, this incident was presented to the Mason County Grand Jury. An indictment was returned for Officer Caleb Savage for Reckless Homicide (class D felony), Failure to Render Aid (class D felony) and Leaving the Scene of an Accident (class D felony). The investigation remains ongoing.
