This investigation is ongoing
Aflex KY (January 10, 2019) Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post 09, has opened a theft investigation at Aflex in Pike County.
Just after 6 Am this morning Kentucky Post 09 received a complaint of a theft from a vehicle. While an employee was working at Appalachian Tobacco a person broke into their vehicle stole a purse and possibly other items from inside the vehicle.
When the Trooper arrived at the store, he viewed the security video and identified the person who broke into the vehicle as Justin M. Hatfield from Delbarton, West Virginia. The Trooper then made contact with Mr. Hatfield at his residence and while questioning him the Trooper discovered evidence indicating he had in fact taken the purse. While in the process of arresting Mr. Hatfield, he assaulted the Trooper and a struggle ensued. Mr. Hatfield then ran over the Bank and jumped into the river. For a short period it was unknown if Mr. Hatfield had made it across the river and Emergency personal were called to assist in the search.
After a short search, Mr. Hatfield was located on the West Virginia side of the river on the railroad tracks. He was transported to Williamson Memorial Hospital for treatment of exposure to the elements.
At 2:40 PM while being treated at the hospital, Mr. Hatfield passed away. His body has been taken to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Frankfort for an Autopsy, which is, scheduled tomorrow the 12th.
This investigation is ongoing and led by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team. Further details will be released as they develop.
