Johnson County, KY (May 1, 2020) – The Kentucky State Police is investigating an officer involved shooting on KY Route 40 near the Johnson, Martin County line.
Shortly after 6:30 P.M, on the evening of April 29th, the Richland County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Kentucky State Police requesting assistance to locate a wanted person from Ohio. The Richland County Sheriff’s Office had information that the suspect had fired shots at two people in Ohio and may be in the Wittensville area of Johnson County. Troopers and local law enforcement attempted to locate the vehicle of the wanted person.
Around 1 AM, the vehicle was located, a traffic stop was initiated, but the driver refused to stop. After a low speed pursuit, the vehicle stopped off KY RT. 40 and KY RT. 3039 in the Spring Knob road area, close to the county line. The male subject barricaded himself inside the box van he was driving. Attempts to negotiate with the driver were unsuccessful. The suspect made statements to local dispatch that he had several loaded firearms, and for the officers to leave the scene.
While attempting to negotiate with the suspect, Kentucky State Police Troopers observed that the suspect was armed with a handgun. After negotiations broke down with the suspect, the suspect pointed the firearm at the Troopers and local officers. In response to this threat, shots were fired and the male subject was pronounced deceased at the scene by Martin County Coroner’s office.
This is an ongoing investigation led by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team. The Kentucky State Police was assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Martin County Coroner’s Office, and the Paintsville City ambulance service.
