Trooper Involved Shooting in Bourbon County, KY

(Bourbon County, KY) - On Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at 4:39 PM EST, Post 6 Dry Ridge received a call from Paris PD Dispatch requesting an attempt to locate on Danny Thornberry (51) of 2600 Cane Ridge Road Paris, KY. Paris Dispatch had received a call that Thornberry was suicidal and possibly homicidal.

KSP Trooper Eric Barnett observed Thornberry's vehicle at 4:54 PM on Cane Ridge Road and followed it a short distance until other responding units were in place and a suitable location for a traffic stop was reached. At 4:59 PM Trooper Barnett activated his vehicle emergency equipment and attempted to stop Mr. Thornberry at the intersection of Cane Ridge Road and KY 3364. Thornberry failed to stop and fled from Troopers at speeds near 100 mph. Thornberry was pursued by Trooper Barnett, Trooper Dennis Mabry and Trooper Kristie Sexton for a short distance until Thornberry stopped at the driveway of his residence, put his vehicle in reverse and rammed Trooper Barnett's cruiser. Thornberry then continued forward down the driveway toward his residence at a high rate of speed. All three KSP Troopers continued to pursue Thornberry until he exited his vehicle and fled into his residence. Trooper Mabry exited his vehicle and approached the doorway where Thornberry had entered the residence. Upon entering the doorway of the residence, Trooper Mabry observed Thornberry raise and point a shotgun at him. Trooper Mabry responded to the threat by firing his service weapon and fatally wounding Thornberry. Bourbon County Deputy Coroner DeeGee Ison pronounced Danny Thornberry dead at the scene. None of the Troopers involved was injured during the incident.

Pursuant to Kentucky State Police policy, Trooper Mabry will be placed on administrative duty while the shooting is investigated. Trooper Mabry is a 3 1/2 year veteran of Kentucky State Police.
