Three arrested on various charges in Rowan County

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On February 23, 2011 at 1006 hours, Kentucky State Police in Morehead was notified, by an employee of Lying Lees used cars that she was traveling on Kentucky 174 westbound in Carter County, possibly behind a Toyota Scion that was reported stolen from Lying Lees used cars. The vehicle was being towed by a black Nissan pickup truck. Trooper Keith Howard, Unit, 523 responded to the area to attempt to locate the vehicle. Trooper Howard located a black 1993 Nissan King Cab truck on Kentucky 174 driving recklessly. At that time the suspect had already abandoned the stolen vehicle in Carter County. Trooper Howard initiated a traffic stop, the suspect drove into a near by yard to try to avoid Trooper Howard. After searching the vehicle several controlled substances and drug paraphernalia was located inside the vehicle along with several pieces of the stolen vehicle. Michael Wesley Chaney of Carrollton, Georgia, was operating the black 1993 Nissan pickup truck and was charged with:

  • Receiving Stolen Property
  • 8 counts of possession of a controlled substance 1st degree-drug unspecified
  • possession of drug paraphernalia
  • DUI second offense aggravating circumstance
  • no insurance
  • no seat belt
  • no registration plate and no registration receipt

Molly Lynn Ward of Temple, Georgia (passenger) was charged with:

  • 7 counts of possession of a controlled substance 1st degree-drug unspecified
  • possession of drug paraphernalia

Kelly Shannon of Wellington, Kentucky (passenger) was charged with:

  • 7 counts of possession of a controlled substance 1st degree-drug unspecified
  • possession of drug paraphernalia

All three were apprehended and are currently lodged at the Carter County Detention Center. Incident remains under investigation by Trooper Keith Howard, Unit 523.
