Powell County Escapees Investigation

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On December 15, 2011 at 3:26 a.m., the Kentucky State Police Post 8, Morehead received notification from the Powell County Dispatch Center that two male subjects had escaped from the Powell County Detention Center in Stanton. The escape took place at approximately 2:00 a.m. The two had escaped through an air vent that led them to an access door. The two subjects are identified as Phillip Wells and Josh Abner. Wells is described as 26 years of age, white male, 5'11", weighing 185 pounds, brown hair, and hazel eyes. He was serving a sentence for Burglary 3rd Degree, Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disposition Sentences, and Persistent Felony Offender. Wells is from the Richmond area. Abner is described as 24 years of age, white male, 6'01", weighing 170 pounds, red hair, and green eyes. Abner is a State Inmate who was recently transferred to the Powell County Jail. He was serving a sentence for Burglary 3rd Degree and Persistent Felony Offender. Abner is from the McKee area. This incident is being investigated by Trooper Joe Veeneman. In addition, the Powell County Dispatch Center received notification at 4:53 a.m. that a 1993 White Honda Accord, 4 door, vehicle tag number 428-CLE was reported stolen from E. College Ave, Stanton. It is unknown if the vehicle theft is related to the escape.
