Death Investigation in Bath County

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 0801 a.m. the Kentucky State Police in Morehead received a call for assistance from the Bath County Sheriff's Department regarding a shooting. Bath County Dispatch had received a call of a shooting incident located in the driveway of a residence on Old Midland Trail. Upon the arrival of officers the bodies of 53 year old Richard N. Spillman of Grayson, Kentucky and 43 year old Valerie K. Stevens of Morehead, Kentucky were found deceased in the driveway of a residence from gunshot wounds. Preliminary investigation indicates that Mrs. Stevens, an employee of St. Claire Regional Medical Center, Home Health Services arrived at a residence on Old Midland Trail to care for a home health patient. Mr. Spillman arrived at the same residence in a separate vehicle, behind Mrs. Stevens in the driveway of the residence, where a confrontation ensued. Mr. Spillman was armed with a pistol and shot Mrs. Stevens before shooting himself. Mr. Spillman and Mrs. Stevens had a prior relationship where they had lived together. Both Spillman and Stevens were pronounced dead at 08:35 a.m. by Bath County Coroner Robbie Powell. Both bodies have been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort, Kentucky for an autopsy. The incident remains under investigation by Detective Toby Gardner.
