Update - Vehicle Fire Closes Parkway

Date of News Release: 01/14/2013

Madisonville, KY. (Hopkins County) -- Currently both northbound lanes and the left, southbound lane are now open.

The Kentucky State Police investigated a vehicle fire on the Edward T. Breathitt Pennyrile Parkway, at approximately the 53 mile-marker, that occurred on Monday, January 14, 2013, at 6:00 a.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Christopher W. Reynolds, age 52 of Corydon, KY, was operating a 2007 International tractor hauling a 2012 Brenner tanker-trailer loaded with hydrochloric acid. As he was traveling southbound on the parkway, the trailer caught fire. Mr. Reynolds was able to disconnect the cab from the trailer.

The roadway was closed for several hours while fire departments and hazmat crews cleared the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Vehicle Fire Closes Parkway

Madisonville, KY. (Hopkins County) -- The Kentucky State Police is currently investigating a vehicle fire on the Edward T. Breathitt Pennyrile Parkway that has closed all northbound and southbound lanes.

A semi tanker truck hauling hydrochloric acid was traveling southbound on the parkway when the cab caught fire. All northbound and southbound lanes between Hanson (exit 49) and Slaughters (exit 54) are closed and will be for several hours.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has established a detour via US 41 between the Slaughters-Calhoun exit at KY 138 and the Hanson exit.

No injuries were reported.
