Post 4 Activity Released For The Month Of March

(Elizabethtown, KY) -- The Kentucky State Police Post 04 in Elizabethtown covers 8 counties. They include: Hardin, Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Meade, Breckinridge, Larue, and Grayson. The West Region covers 8 post areas. They are: Post 1, Post 2, Post 3, Post 4, Post 5, Post 12, Post 15, and Post 16.

We will continue to conduct traffic safety checkpoints through April and the rest of 2013 looking for impaired drivers, unrestrained motorists, and other traffic violations at various locations throughout our post area.

For the month of March 2013, Post 04 Troopers and Detectives wrote a total of 1,550 citations. We removed 51 drunk drivers from Kentucky roadways and cited 311 speeders. 293 violators were charged for failure to wear a seatbelt and 10 citations were for failure to use a child restraint. We investigated 112 crashes and conducted 1,866 vehicle inspections. 843 motorists were given a courtesy notice in lieu of a traffic citation for minor traffic offenses. We assisted 168 motorists stranded on Kentucky roadways and answered over 1,259 citizenís complaints. We were involved in 668 special details and conducted over 20 community programs which reached over 1,500 citizens of the Commonwealth. Our Detectives and Troopers opened over 66 criminal cases, made 258 criminal arrests, and served over 108 criminal court documents. In addition, we contacted over 636 victims of crimes on cases that we investigated. Additionally, we conducted over 415 school and business security checks throughout the entire Post 4 area. In total, Post 04 Troopers, Detectives, and Command Staff logged over 9,689 hours of service for the Kentucky citizens we served.

In addition to the Trooper and Detective monthly activity, Post 4 dispatchers logged over 2,468 data entries while still answering hundreds of calls from citizens in our area.

Preliminary statistics* indicate that nine people died in seven separate crashes on Kentuckyís roadways from Monday, Mar. 25 through Sunday, Mar. 31, 2013.

One triple-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in Christian County.

One single-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Jefferson, Mason, Metcalfe, Muhlenberg, Pike and Whitley. The victims in Jefferson, Mason, Metcalfe, Muhlenberg and Pike counties were not wearing seat belts.

Through Mar. 31, preliminary statistics* indicate that 124 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 32 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 109 motor vehicle fatalities, 54 victims were not wearing seat belts. One of the four motorcycle fatalities was not wearing a helmet. Ten pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 26 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of Mar. 31, Kentucky has had 25 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
