(Elizbethtown, KY) -- The Kentucky State Police Post 04 in Elizabethtown covers 8 counties. They include: Hardin, Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Meade, Breckinridge, Larue, and Grayson.
We will continue to conduct traffic safety checkpoints through June and the rest of 2013 looking for impaired drivers, unrestrained motorists, and other traffic violations at various locations throughout our post area.
For the month of May 2013, Post 04 Troopers and Detectives wrote a total of 1,704 citations. We removed 42 drunk drivers from Kentucky roadways and cited 476 speeders. 272 violators were charged for failure to wear a seatbelt and 10 citations were for failure to use a child restraint. We investigated 106 crashes and conducted 2,362 vehicle inspections. 760 motorists were given a courtesy notice in lieu of a traffic citation for minor traffic offenses. We assisted 156 motorists stranded on Kentucky roadways and answered over 1,327 citizenís complaints. We were involved in 841 special details and conducted over 20 community programs which reached over 2,500 citizens of the Commonwealth. Our Detectives and Troopers opened over 52 criminal cases, made 217 criminal arrests, and served over 132 criminal court documents. In addition, we contacted over 602 victims of crimes on cases that we investigated. Additionally, we conducted over 398 school and business security checks throughout the entire Post 4 area. In total, Post 04 Troopers, Detectives, and Command Staff logged over 11,414 hours of service for the Kentucky citizens we served.
In addition to the Trooper and Detective monthly activity, Post 4 dispatchers logged over 2,842 data entries while still answering hundreds of calls from citizens in our area.
Preliminary statistics* indicate that 19 people died in 18 separate crashes on Kentuckyís roadways from Tuesday, May 28 through Sunday, June 2, 2013.
One double-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in Calloway County. One of the victims was not wearing a seat belt.
Four single-fatality motor vehicle crashes occurred in Jefferson County. Two of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Two of the crashes involved the suspected use of alcohol.
One single-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Calloway, Campbell, Gallatin, Hardin, Johnson, Marshall and Scott. The victims in Gallatin, Johnson, Marshall and Scott counties were not wearing seat belts. The crash in Scott County involved the suspected use of alcohol.
One single-fatality, motorcycle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Breathitt, Letcher, Lewis, Meade, Pike and Scott. The victims in Letcher, Lewis, Meade, Pike and Scott counties were not wearing helmets.
Through June 2, preliminary statistics* indicate that 236 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 75 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 190 motor vehicle fatalities, 93 victims were not wearing seat belts. Eighteen of the 27 motorcycle fatalities were not wearing helmets. The one ATV fatality was not wearing a helmet. One bicycle rider has been killed. Sixteen pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 45 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of June 2, Kentucky has had 39 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
