(ELIZABETHTOWN, KY.) - The Kentucky State Police Post 04 in Elizabethtown covers 8 counties. They include: Hardin, Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Meade, Breckenridge, Larue, and Grayson. The West Region covers 8 post areas. They are: Post 1, Post 2, Post 3, Post 4, Post 5, Post 12, Post 15, and Post 16.

We will continue to conduct traffic safety checkpoints through May and the rest of 2013 looking for impaired drivers, unrestrained motorists, and other traffic violations at various locations throughout our post area.

For the month of September 2013, Post 04 Troopers and Detectives wrote a total of 1226 citations. We removed 23 drunk drivers from Kentucky roadways and cited 428 speeders. 106 violators were charged with failure to wear a seatbelt and 6 citations were for failure to use a child restraint. We investigated 81 crashes and conducted 1501 vehicle inspections. 512 motorists were given a courtesy notice in lieu of a traffic citation for minor traffic offenses. We assisted 104 motorists stranded on Kentucky roadways and answered over 1032 citizenís complaints. We were involved in 700 special details and conducted over 11 community programs which reached over 1400 citizens of the Commonwealth. Our Detectives and Troopers opened over 68 criminal cases, made 174 criminal arrests, and served over 70 criminal court documents. In addition, we contacted over 484 victims of crimes on cases that we investigated. Additionally, we conducted over 158 school and business security checks throughout the entire Post 4 area. In total, Post 04 Troopers, Detectives, and Command Staff logged over 8,528 hours of service for the Kentucky citizens we served.

In addition to the Trooper and Detective monthly activity, Post 4 dispatchers logged over 2006 data entries while still answering hundreds of calls from citizens in our area.

Through Sept. 29, preliminary statistics* indicate that 473 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 76 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 365 motor vehicle fatalities, 182 victims were not wearing seat belts. Forty-two of the 63 motorcycle fatalities were not wearing helmets. The nine ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. Two bicycle riders have been killed. Thirty-three pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 102 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of Sept. 29, Kentucky has had 62 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
