Kentucky State Police Make Felony Arrest in Boyle County

(Danville, KY) -- On Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 10:39 EDT troopers assigned to the Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint on KY 34 at the Boyle/Garrard County Line. A green Ford Explorer was driven through the checkpoint and failed to stop when officers attempted to flag down the vehicle. Officers pursued the suspect for approximately 8 miles until the Explorer turned onto Waterworks Road and the operator lost control. The suspect drove through a fence and into a field where the vehicle became disabled. The operator, Elvin Spears, became combative with officers on the scene but was taken into custody. Spears was transported to Ephriam McDowell RMC for treatment of the injuries he sustained in the collision.
Elvin Spears, 52 years old of Stanford, KY, has been charged with Driving Under the Influence Fourth Offense, Wanton Endangerment First Degree, Fleeing or Evading Police First Degree, Resisting Arrest, Assault Third Degree, Speeding, Driving on a DUI Suspended License, Reckless Driving, Theft of Motor Vehicle Registration Plate, Possession of Open Alcoholic Beverage Container, Failure to Produce Proof of Insurance, and Failure to Wear Seat Belt.
Trooper David Fugate is the investigating officer and was assisted at the scene by other KSP personnel, the Boyle County Sheriff's Office and Boyle County EMS.
