Fatal Traffic Crash in Clay County

(LONDON, KY.) - On Saturday, October 04, 2014 at approximately 6:35 PM, the Kentucky State Police Post 11, London received a report of fatal traffic crash on US HWY 421 in Clay County.

Upon arrival KSP Detective Justin Oliver determined that a 2003 Ford Explorer operated by Rodney W. Bowling, 26, of London was traveling northbound when he crossed the center-line and struck a 1999 Ford Ranger head-on which was traveling southbound and being operated by Ronnie Mitchell, 50, of Manchester.

Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clay County Coroner's Office.

The passengers in the Ford Ranger Melissa Smith, 48, of Manchester and a juvenile were both air lifted from the scene and taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where they both are being treated for their injuries.

Rodney Bowling was transported to the Manchester Memorial Hospital and received treatment and later released and arrested. He was charged with Murder, two counts of Assault 1st Degree and DUI. He was lodged in the Clay County Detention Center.

Detective Oliver is in charge of the investigation and was assisted at the scene by Trooper Ritchie Baxter, Clay County Sheriff's Office, Manchester Police Department, Lockards Creek Fire Department and Clay County EMS.
