Additional charges in Whitesburg stabbing death

(Whitesburg, KY) - Additional charges have been filed against a Pike County man already incarcerated for his involvement in a New Year's morning assault that left one man dead and two others injured. An arrest warrant was obtained and served today on twenty-seven year old Patrick Smith of Marrowbone, in Pike County. Smith's previous residence was Lexington, KY.

Further investigations by Kentucky State Police detectives led to Mr. Smith being charged with one count of complicity to commit murder, and one count of criminal mischief, 1st degree.

Patrick Smith and James Huffman were involved in a physical altercation early Wednesday morning, which resulted in the death of Michael Hogg, of Whitesburg. Two other men were injured in the confrontation. Both Smith and Huffman remain lodged in the Letcher County Detention Center. This incident remains under investigation by KSP Post 13 detectives, lead by Det. Joel Abner.

Three Injured, one Fatally, during altercation in Whitesburg

(Whitesburg, KY) - On Wednesday, January 1, 2014, Kentucky State Police Post 13, in Hazard, received a 911 call from Letcher County reporting that a male subject had been stabbed during an altercation in downtown Whitesburg, Kentucky. Post 13 troopers, Whitesburg Police Department officers, and members of Neon Ambulance and Whitesburg responded to the Letcher County Recreation Center, where the victims were located.

It was determined that four to five subjects had been involved in a physical confrontation on Hayes Street in Whitesburg, after leaving Streetside Grill & Bar. During this incident, three male subjects sustained injuries, while a female was uninjured. Michael Shane Hogg, age 25 of Whitesburg, was pronounced deceased at the Whitesburg ARH, by the Letcher County Coroner. David Christopher Puckett, age 23 of Jenkins, was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. His condition is unknown at this time. Stacy Phillips, age 23 of Thornton, was treated and released at the Whitesburg ARH, while 23 year old Samantha Mullins was not injured.

James R. Huffman, age 24, of Pikeville, was arrested and charged with one count of murder, and one count each of assault 1st and 2nd degree. Twenty-seven year old Patrick Smith, of Lexington, was also arrested and charged with two counts of carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and one count of tampering with physical evidence. Both were lodged in the Letcher County Detention Center. This incident remains under investigation by Detective Joel Abner, with KSP Post 13.
