Date of News Release: 12/04/2014

Greenville, KY (Muhlenberg County) - The Kentucky State Police investigated a two-vehicle, injury collision that occurred on KY 171, approximately 3 1/2 miles south of Greenville, on Thursday, December 4, 2014, at 2:10 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Hailey Mayes, 19, of Greenville, was operating a 1998 Ford Ranger southbound on KY 171. Mark Melton, 52, of Greenville, was operating a 1995 Nissan Maxima northbound on KY 171.

As Ms. Mayes was traveling southbound, the passenger side tires dropped off the roadway. It appears that she overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle slid sideways and traveled into the northbound lane where it was struck by Mr. Melton's vehicle. Ms. Mayes' vehicle overturned and came to rest on its top on the road. Mr. Melton's vehicle exited the right side of the roadway and came to rest upright in a ditch.

Mr. Melton was transported via ambulance to the Muhlenberg Community Hospital for treatment. Ms. Mayes was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. There were no passengers involved.

Trooper First Class Jerry Knight investigated the collision. The Greenville Fire Department and Muhlenberg County EMS assisted at the scene.
