Leitchfield Woman Killed in Grayson County Collision

(LEITCHFIELD, KY.) - On Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at approximately 6:50 A.M. CST, Kentucky State Police Post 04 received a call in regards to an accident that occurred in the 4000 block of Lilac Rd. Lucia Taylor (16) of Leitchfield was operating a 1997 Jeep, north on Lilac Rd. Carol Helphenstine (64) of Leitchfield was operating a 2011 Kia, south on Lilac Rd. Ms. Taylor crested a hill that was covered in black ice and lost control of her vehicle and crossed the center line. Ms. Taylor's vehicle then struck Mrs. Helphenstine's vehicle head on in the southbound lane. The vehicle driven by Ms. Taylor then slid off of the east side of the road and overturned onto its side. The vehicle operated by Mrs. Helphenstine slid into the ditchline on the west side of Lilac Rd. Mrs. Helphenstine was pronounced dead at the scene by the Grayson Co. Coroner's Office. Ms. Taylor was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital. KSP was assisted on the scene by the Grayson Co. Sheriff's Office, Grayson Co. EMS, and the Leitchfield Fire Dept. The accident is under investigation by KSP Det. Terry Whittaker.
