Murder Investigation in Clay County

(LONDON, KY.) - On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at approximately 9:30 PM, Kentucky State Police Post 11, London was notified by staff at the Manchester Memorial Hospital about an adult male that was brought in by ambulance with severe injuries that had possibly occurred due to neglect.

Trooper Richie Baxter arrived at the hospital and discovered the victim, Charles Burkhart JR, 32, of Manchester, to be in critical condition and was going to be transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center to receive treatment for his injuries.

On Wednesday, January 14, 2015, the victim's wife, Amy L. Burkhart, 32, of Manchester, was charged with Criminal Abuse 1st Degree after further investigation discovered that the victim had been in the care of his wife since 2007 after he became paralyzed in a car crash.

On Thursday, January 15, 2015, Trooper Baxter was notified by the University of Kentucky Medical Center that the victim had died as a result of his injuries and that his body had been transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

Based on the autopsy findings, and after consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office, Amy Burkhart was arrested at her residence by Trooper Baxter on Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at approximately 7:32 PM, on an upgraded charge of Murder and lodged in the Clay County Detention Center.

Trooper Baxter is continuing the investigation.
