Collision at Area Speedway Claims the Life of Drag Race Participant

Date of News Release: 10/12/2015

(Isom, KY) - A Pike County man was killed Saturday evening after the drag racing car he was operating left the track and crashed. Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard responded to Mountain Motor Speedway after receiving a call of the crash at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

Witnesses at the raceway advised investigators that Willard Michael Hicks, age 61 of Shelby Gap, KY, was operating a 1964 Nova during a drag race when the car collided with a guard rail on the track. The car veered across the drag strip and traveled over a railing where it overturned and struck an embankment. The car then collided with a tree before coming to rest on its top. Hicks was transported by Letcher Ambulance Service to Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased by the Letcher County Coroner.

This incident remains under investigation by Trooper Scott Caudill with KSP Post 13 in Hazard.
