Madisonville Man Arrested After Fleeing From A Traffic Safety Checkpoint

Mortons Gap, KY (Hopkins County) - The Kentucky State Police arrested a Madisonville man after he fled from a traffic safety checkpoint.

On Sunday, February 8, at approximately 8:23 p.m., Troopers Eric Browning, Cody Kromer, and Jonathon Ward were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint at KY 813 and Flat Creek Road.

An Oldsmobile came through the checkpoint and the operator of the Oldsmobile was instructed to exit the vehicle for a roadside interview. Trooper Ward instructed the passenger, identified as Owen W. Gamblin, 39, of Madisonville, to exit the vehicle. Mr. Gamblin ignored Trooper Ward's instructions and moved toward the driver's seat. As Trooper Ward was attempting to stop Mr. Gamblin from moving, Gamblin gained control of the vehicle and fled from the scene. Trooper Ward became lodged in the vehicle and was dragged a short distance before becoming dislodged. A short, vehicle pursuit ensued before Mr. Gamblin lost control of the vehicle and struck a utility pole guide wire at KY 813 and KY 1215. Mr. Gamblin was then removed from the vehicle and placed under arrest.

Trooper Ward was transported via ambulance to Baptist Health Madisonville where he was treated and released.

Mr. Gamblin was lodged in the Hopkins County Jail and charged with the following offenses:

  1. Speeding 26 MPH or > Over the Limit
  2. DUI 1st Offense (Aggravating Circumstances)
  3. 3 counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree – Police Officer
  4. Fleeing/Evading Police 1st Degree (Motor Vehicle)
  5. Resisting Arrest
  6. Possession of Marijuana
  7. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  8. Theft by Unlawful Taking (Motor Vehicle) Over $10,000
  9. Criminal Mischief 1st Degree
  10. Assault 1st Degree - Police Officer

Sergeant Brian Duvall, the Hopkins County Sheriff's Department, and Medical Center Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
