KSP Investigates Fatal Collision in Pike County

(Lower Johns Creek, KY) - The Kentucky State Police, Pikeville Post, is investigating a fatal collision in Pike County that occurred in the morning hours of June 29, 2015.
The initial investigation indicates that Joy Varney, 23 years old of Lower Johns Creek, Kentucky, was driving South on Caney Creek Road in the Gulnare community, when the vehicle she was operating left the roadway and struck a tree. Varney was transported from the scene by Transtar Ambulance Service to Pikeville Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased. Information obtained at the scene indicates that Varney was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision, and alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Detective Jason Merlo.
