Date of News Release: 3/14/2017

Bulan, Ky (Tuesday, March 14, 2017) – A two vehicle collision in Perry County claimed the life of a Leslie County man early yesterday evening. Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard responded to KY Highway 476 in the Bulan community after dispatchers received calls about the crash at around 5:35 p.m. Officials with Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Perry County EMS and Jakes Branch Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The preliminary investigation at the scene determined that a 2007 Kia van was traveling west on KY 476, when the vehicle crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lane, where it collided head-on with a 1999 Chevrolet pick-up. The driver of the Chevrolet, 39 year old Stephen Griffie of Hyden was pronounced deceased at the scene by Perry County Deputy Coroner Jeffrey Combs. Kaegan Welch-Embrey, who was operating the Kia van, was air-lifted to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN, for treatment of non-life threatening injuries sustained in this collision.

Stephen Griffie was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office, where an autopsy will be performed later today. Toxicology results are pending on both drivers, and no criminal charges have been filed at this time. Neither was wearing a seatbelt at the time of this collision. This incident remains under investigation by Trooper Scott Caudill, with KSP Post 13.
