Kentucky State Police Investigating Multi-Vehicle Collision

BARDWELL, KY (October 4, 2017) – The Kentucky State Police are investigating a collision that occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on October 3, 2017. The collision, which occurred on Highway 51 near the 600 block of Elm Street in Bardwell, involved five vehicles including a state police cruiser.
Immediately prior to the collision, Kenneth Smith was driving a 2009 Buick Enclave south on Highway 51 when, for unknown reasons, he struck three other vehicles as well as other objects. One of those objects, a gas pump, then struck a state police cruiser which was being refueled. Mr. Smith’s vehicle then struck a large pole in the Dollar General Store parking lot.
Kenneth B. Smith, age 58, of Paducah, Kentucky, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carlisle County Coroner. An autopsy of Mr. Smith is scheduled today.
The operator of one of the other vehicles, Kenneth W. Underwood, age 71, of Bardwell, Kentucky was transported by ambulance to Lourdes Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
