Eighteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Sept. 10 through Sept. 16)

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 18 people died in 16 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Sept. 10 through Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007.

Fourteen of the fatalities were traveling in motor vehicles and nine of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of two of the victims is not known at this time. One of the fatalities was the result of a motorcycle crash. Three of the victims were pedestrians. Five of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol.

Two double fatality crashes were reported: one in Clinton County and one in Daviess County. Two single-fatality crashes occurred in Jefferson County. Single-fatality crashes also occurred in Boone, Fleming, Harlan, Henderson, Lawrence, Letcher Morgan, Muhlenberg and Scott counties.

Two pedestrians were killed in Jefferson County and one in Fayette County.

Through Sept. 16, preliminary statistics* indicate that 597 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 31 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 478 motor vehicle fatalities, 278 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 72 motorcycle fatalities, 40 were not wearing helmets. Of the 22 ATV fatalities, 18 were not wearing helmets. Twenty-four pedestrians and one bicyclist have been killed. A total of 141 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
