KSP Announces Results of Multistate Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Blitz

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- On Wednesday, April 14th, commercial vehicle enforcement personnel and troopers from Kentucky State Police, Indiana State Police, Ohio Highway Patrol and Michigan State Police participated in a multistate enforcement blitz aimed at improving the safety of the interstate system specifically for and around commercial motor vehicles.

In the 24 hour blitz period, in Kentucky alone, 419 commercial motor vehicles were inspected resulting in 160 traffic citations and 188 written warnings. Of the 419 commercial motor vehicles inspected, 723 violations were discovered and 42 drivers and 72 vehicles were placed out of service. In addition to the commercial motor vehicles enforcement statistics, drivers of passenger vehicles were issued 15 citations and 29 written warnings for various traffic violations around commercial motor vehicles.

The totals for the multistate commercial motor vehicle enforcement efforts are as follows: 1,310 inspections found 2,423 violations, of which 364 were considered "Out of Service Violations". Eighty Seven drivers and 175 vehicles were placed "Out of Service". Aggressive moving violations among passenger vehicles and commercial motor vehicles are: Following too closely, 28 tickets and 28 warnings, unsafe lane movement, 14 tickets and 17 warnings, disregarding a traffic control device, 58 tickets and 13 warnings and speeding, 169 tickets and 181 warnings.

The focus of this project was to target safety issues concerning commercial motor vehicle drivers, load securement, as well as drivers of passenger vehicles operating around Commercial Motor Vehicles in an unsafe manner. Troopers also targeted drivers of passenger vehicle who choose to operate their vehicles in an unsafe manor around commercial motor vehicles.

Anytime a commercial motor vehicle is involved in a crash the chances of someone being killed increase dramatically. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers from Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio will continue to work together in an effort to reduce the number of deaths and crashes involving unsafe vehicles and driver error.
