Cadet Uniforms and Dress Code

All cadet uniforms shall be classified as follows:

Utility Uniform
Issue black baseball cap, issue grey web belt, grey crew neck T-shirt and issued jump boots bloused in the standard military fashion. The shirt shall be tucked into the trouser.

Nameplates, Pins and Metal Insignia
The "KSP" pins shall be worn on the collar of the uniform shirt (not utility uniform) and shall be centered on the collar of the shirt three-fourths of an inch below the fold of the collar and three-fourths of an inch from the front of the collar.

Belts
The black web belt with subdued black tip and open-faced black subdued buckle shall be worn with the utility uniform.

All plated items, shall not be polished with any abrasive materials as this will remove the plating. Only a soft cloth shall be used to remove fingerprints from these items. CADET pins are solid brass and may be shined with appropriate materials.

Both issued leather uniform shoes and jump boots shall be shined to a high gloss and maintained as such during the training period. Footwear shall be polished with the appropriate shoe polish, no lacquers or other artificial coating will be acceptable.

The Kentucky State Police summer, winter and utility uniforms are prescribed by the Training Academy Commander and are as follows:

The Class A Uniform shall be worn November 1 through March 31 and shall consist of the following:
Winter campaign hat (felt);
Long sleeve shirt:
Winter trousers; and
Tie tucked in between second and third button

The Class B Uniform shall be worn as directed by a supervisor or policy and shall consist of the following:
Summer campaign hat (straw);
Long sleeve shirt;
Summer trousers; and
Tie tucked in between second and third button

The Class C Uniform shall be worn April 1 through October 31 and shall consist of the following:
Summer campaign hat (straw);
Short sleeve shirt;
Summer trousers; and

Long sleeve BDU shirt (for summer wear, sleeves will be properly rolled above the elbow.), grey issued T-shirt, BDU trousers (bloused), utility cap, web belt with subdued buckle, and boots. (At the direction of a staff member, issued uniform shoes may be worn instead of boots.)

Black Uniform Jacket,
Raincoat,
Leather gunbelt with components.

Nameplate The nameplate shall be worn one-half inch below the top of the left pocket flap.

Marksmanship Award The appropriate Marksmanship Award shall be centered one-half inch below the top right pocket flap. (NOT UTILITY UNIFORM)

Whistle and Chain The whistle shall be carried in the right shirt pocked and whistle chain shall be be hooked under the shoulder epaulet. (NOT-UTILITY UNIFORM)

Wearing of Uniform Hat The uniform hat is part of each State Police uniform and shall be worn as such. In any event, personnel to whom uniforms are issued shall wear the uniform of the day, including hat, as prescribed at all times while on duty unless authorized otherwise. The only exception is while inside a building, while in a vehicle, and during prayer.

Leather Pistol Belt The leather pistol belt shall be worn with the uniform while performing official training duties. The waist belt shall be adjusted to fit the wearer snugly with the buckle centered at the wearer's front.

Handcuff Case The handcuff case shall be worn on the opposite side from the holster just to the rear of the stripe on the uniform trousers.

Ammunition Pouches The positioning of the ammunition pouch is optional and may be worn on either side of the leather pistol belt to the front of the stripe on the uniform trousers and toward the belt buckle. The overlap of the belt shall be worn on the side opposite the ammunition pouch.

Holster The holster shall be worn on the strong hand side of the officer approximately in line with the uniform stripe of the trousers. It shall not be worn pushed back on the hip or pushed forward.

Baton Carriers Baton carriers shall be placed on the belt in positions, which are most convenient for the individual officers.

Crewneck T-Shirt When the Class B uniform is worn, a white crewneck T-shirt shall be worn. The T-shirt should fit snugly around the base of the wearer's neck and should not present a loose or wrinkled effect. Grey issued T-shirts shall be worn with the utility uniform.

Uniform Socks Officers in uniform shall wear uniform issued shoes. Uniform socks shall be black in color, with no design.

Uniform Shoes Only issued type shoes shall be worn as a part of the uniform and will be highly shined.

Overshoes Issued overshoes may be worn as needed.

Uniform Boots Only issued type boots shall be worn as a part of the utility uniform and will be highly shined and fully laced.

No cadet shall wear a necklace or chain of any kind. Large watch bands, rings, bracelets, earrings and other items that detract from the uniform shall not be worn. (3 Demerits)

The cadet uniform shall be kept clean, and in serviceable condition at all times.(3 Demerits)

Cadets shall wear the uniform of the day as prescribed by the Commander at all times unless otherwise authorized or directed by a member of the staff. Under no circumstances will the uniform or any of its parts be worn away from the Academy unless authorized training activities or prior approval from a staff member has been given. This applies particularly to weekend leave. (Dismissal)

State Police uniforms will be kept clean and pressed any time they are displayed in the cadet's room. (3 Demerits)

Off Duty Attire on Academy Grounds Click here for more information

Unless otherwise directed to do so by a member of the Academy staff, cadets will have on a prescribed uniform (e.g.: P.T. or utility), including all its parts, while off duty on the Academy grounds. Rubber shower shoes may be substituted for gym shoes while in the PT uniform while a cadet is in his/her room. (3 Demerits)
