Thirteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (October 8 - October 14th, 2007)

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 13 people died in 12 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, October 8 through Sunday, October 14, 2007.
Eleven of the fatalities were traveling in motor vehicles and seven of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Two of the fatalities were the result of motorcycle crashes. Both of those victims were not wearing a helmet. Three of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol.
One double fatality and one single fatality crash occurred in Jefferson County. Single-fatality crashes also occurred in Barren, Henry, McCracken, Johnson, Madison, Shelby, Muhlenberg and Floyd counties. The motorcycle fatalities occurred in Perry and Mason counties.
Through October 14th, preliminary statistics* indicate that 678 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 33 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 538 motor vehicle fatalities, 309 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 87 motorcycle fatalities, 51 were not wearing helmets. Of the 24 ATV fatalities, 20 were not wearing helmets. Twenty-eight pedestrians and one bicyclist have been killed. A total of 162 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
