(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 13 people died in 12 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, October 15 through Sunday, October 21, 2007.

Eight of the fatalities were traveling in motor vehicles and one of the victims was not wearing a seat belt. The seat belt status of two of the victims is not known at this time. Three of the fatalities were the result of motorcycle crashes. Two were not wearing a helmet. Two fatalities involved pedestrians. One double fatality crash occurred in Fayette County. Two single-fatality crashes occurred in Jefferson County. Single-fatality crashes also occurred in Marshall, Taylor, Scott, Wolfe, Boyd, Knott, Lee and Pike counties.

Through October 21, preliminary statistics* indicate that 693 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 43 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 547 motor vehicle fatalities, 311 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 90 motorcycle fatalities, 52 were not wearing helmets. Of the 24 ATV fatalities, 20 were not wearing helmets. Thirty-one pedestrians and one bicyclist have been killed. A total of 166 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
