Date of News Release: 03/02/09
(Frankfort, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in eight separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, February 23 through Sunday, March 1, 2009.
Six of the crashes involved motor vehicles and none of those victims were wearing seat belts. The seat belt status is still pending for one crash. Single-vehicle crashes occurred in Johnson, Laurel, Russell and Todd counties. Two of these crashes involved the suspected use of alcohol.
A double-fatality crash occurred in Warren county and involved the suspected use of alcohol. Authorities with the Warren County Sheriff's Office say the vehicle was traveling westbound on Kentucky 1297 when their truck dropped off the side of the road. Both the driver and the passenger succumbed to their injuries.
A triple-fatality crash occurred on Route 460 in Johnson county when a Pepsi truck collided head on with a pick up truck. The pick up truck was fully engulfed in flames when emergency personnel arrived. One victim was thrown from the pick up truck and the other two were located inside the truck. All three victims died on the scene. The Pepsi driver was transported to a local hospital where he is recovering.
One pedestrian fatality occurred in Hardin county and an ATV fatality occurred in Breathitt county.
Through March 1, preliminary statistics* indicate that 99 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2009. This is six fewer than reported for the same time period in 2008. Of the 91 motor vehicle fatalities, 52 victims were not wearing seat belts. Six pedestrian have been killed. One fatality involved a motorcycle and one fatality involved an ATV. A total of twenty-six fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
