KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release
Thirteen Die on Kentucky Roadways Last Week (June 22 - 28)
Date of News Release: 06/29/09
(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that thirteen people died in thirteen separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, June 22 through Sunday, June 28, 2009.
Eleven of the crashes involved motor vehicles and five of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Christian, Franklin, Grant, Graves (2), Greenup, Jefferson, Livingston, Montgomery, Morgan, and Whitley counties. Alcohol was a factor in the Christian county crash.
Two motorcycle-involved fatalities occurred in Casey and Trigg county. Neither victim was wearing a helmet.
Through June 28, preliminary statistics* indicate that 371 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2009. This is four fewer fatalities reported from the same time period in 2008. There were 312 motor vehicle fatalities and 172 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Seventeen pedestrians have been killed. Thirty-six fatalities involved a motorcycle and five fatalities involved an ATV. A total of eighty-four fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
