KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Eleven Die On Kentucky Roadways (06/01 - 06/06)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in nine separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Tuesday, June 1, through Sunday, June 6, 2010.

Seven of the crashes involved motor vehicles and one victim was not wearing a seat belt. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Boone, Estill, Jefferson, Scott, Shelby and Woodford counties. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in the Boone and Jefferson County crashes. A triple-fatality motor vehicle crash occurred in Madison County.

One fatal ATV involved crash occurred in Greenup County. The victim was not wearing a helmet.

One pedestrian involved fatal crash occurred in Whitley County and involved the suspected use of alcohol.

Through June 6 preliminary statistics* indicate that 267 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 68 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2009. There were 220 motor vehicle fatalities and 113 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-four of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Twenty-five fatal crashes involved a pedestrian and 1 involved a scooter. Sixteen crashes involved a motorcycle and seven of those victims were not wearing helmets. Four crashes involved an ATV and three victims were not wearing helmets. A total of 64 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
