(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that 16 people died in 14 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, June 7 through Sunday, June 13, 2010.
Thirteen of the fatalities were traveling in motor vehicles. Six of the victims were not wearing seat belts. One of the fatalities was the result of a crash involving alcohol. Three of the fatalities were riding motorcycles. One was not wearing a helmet.
Two double-fatality crashes occurred: one in Boyle County and one in Ohio County. Two single-fatality crashes occurred in Boyd County and Henderson County. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Barren, Breckinridge, Estill, Floyd, Hardin, Jefferson, Letcher and Muhlenberg counties.
Through June 13, preliminary statistics* indicate that 287 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 60 fewer than reported for this time period in 2009. Of the 237 motor vehicle fatalities, 119 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 19 motorcycle fatalities, eight were not wearing helmets. Three of the four ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. The single scooter fatality was not wearing a helmet. One bicyclist and 25 pedestrians have been killed. A total of 67 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
