Date of News Release: 06/28/10

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that twelve people died in eleven separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, June 21, through Sunday, June 27, 2010.

Six of the crashes involved motor vehicles and four of the victims were not wearing a seat belt. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Breathitt, Estill, Jefferson (2), Kenton and Pulaski counties. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in the Breathitt and Pulaski County crashes.

One fatal ATV involved crash occurred in Knox County. The victim was not wearing a helmet.

A double fatality motorcycle crash occurred in Breckinridge County and both victims were wearing helmets. Three single fatality motorcycle crashes occurred in Magoffin, Muhlenberg and Shelby counties. One of the victims was wearing a helmet.

Through June 27 preliminary statistics* indicate that 329 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 51 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2009. There were 268 motor vehicle fatalities and 136 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Forty-two of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Twenty-six fatal crashes involved a pedestrian and 1 involved a scooter. Twenty-seven crashes involved a motorcycle and thirteen of those victims were not wearing helmets. Six crashes involved an ATV and four victims were not wearing helmets. One crash involved a bicycle. A total of 75 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
