Nine Die On Kentucky Roadways (Aug 16 through Aug. 22)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that nine people died in eight separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, August 16, through Sunday, August 22, 2010.
Four of the crashes involved motor vehicles and none of the victims were not wearing a seat belt. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Clay, Fulton, and Powell counties. One double-fatality crash occurred in Fleming County.
Two separate motorcycle crashes occurred in Graves and Wolfe counties. The victim in the Graves County crash was wearing a helmet.
One ATV involved fatal crash occurred in Knox County and the victim was not wearing a helmet.
A pedestrian involved fatal crash occurred in Jefferson County.
Through August 22 preliminary statistics* indicate that 470 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 30 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2009. There were 372 motor vehicle fatalities and 193 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Fifty-five of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Thirty-six fatal crashes involved a pedestrian and 1 involved a scooter. Fifty crashes involved a motorcycle and twenty-nine of those victims were not wearing helmets. Nine crashes involved an ATV and seven victims were not wearing helmets. Two crashes involved a bicycle. A total of 101 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
