Eleven Die On Kentucky Roadways (Oct. 4 through Oct. 10)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in ten separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Oct. 4, through Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010.

Six of the crashes involved motor vehicles and three of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Casey, Daviess, Logan, Mason, Metcalfe, and Nicholas counties. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in the Casey County crash.

Two motorcycle involved fatal crashes occurred in Meade and Woodford (2) counties and none of the victims were wearing helmets. The Woodford County crash was a double-fatality crash involving two motorcycles.

One pedestrian involved fatal crash occurred in Fayette County.

One bicycle involved fatal crash occurred in Warren County and the victim was not wearing a helmet.

Through Oct. 10, preliminary statistics* indicate that 584 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 36 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2009. There were 454 motor vehicle fatalities and 236 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Sixty-five of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Forty-five fatal crashes involved a pedestrian and two involved a scooter. Sixty-eight crashes involved a motorcycle and forty of those victims were not wearing helmets. Eleven crashes involved an ATV and nine victims were not wearing helmets. Four crashes involved a bicycle. A total of 120 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
