Date of News Release: 11/01/10
(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that thirteen people died in twelve separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Oct. 25, through Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010.
Nine of the crashes involved motor vehicles and eight of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Boyle, Christian, Cumberland, Jefferson, Laurel, Madison (2), McLean, and Warren counties. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in the Cumberland, Madison and Warren county crashes.
One double-fatality ATV crash occurred in Knott County and the victims were not wearing helmets.
Two pedestrian involved fatal crashes occurred in Jefferson County.
Through Oct. 31, preliminary statistics* indicate that 630 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 29 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2009. There were 485 motor vehicle fatalities and 256 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Sixty-eight of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Forty-nine fatal crashes involved a pedestrian and two involved a scooter. Seventy-four crashes involved a motorcycle and forty-two of those victims were not wearing helmets. Fifteen crashes involved an ATV and thirteen victims were not wearing helmets. Five crashes involved a bicycle. A total of 128 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
