KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Ten Die On Kentucky Roadways (March 14 through March 20)

Date of News Release: 03/21/11

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that 10 people died in 10 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Mar. 14 through Sunday, Mar. 20, 2011.

Eight of the victims were traveling in motor vehicles. Three were not wearing seat belts. One of the fatalities was riding a motorcycle and not wearing a helmet. One was operating an ATV. One of the fatalities was the result of a crash involving alcohol.

Single-fatality crashes occurred in Adair, Bracken, Caldwell, Christian, Clay, Floyd, Hardin, Henderson, Rockcastle and Scott counties.

Through Mar. 20, preliminary statistics* indicate that 125 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is four fewer than reported for this time period in 2010. Of the 103 motor vehicle fatalities, 58 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the four motorcycle fatalities, three were not wearing helmets. One of the two ATV fatalities was not wearing a helmet. Sixteen pedestrians have been killed. A total of 17 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
