KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Eleven Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week
(Aug 1 through Aug 7)

Date of News Release: 08/08/11

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in nine separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Aug. 1, through Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011.

Ten of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and five of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Casey, Daviess, Grayson, Hopkins, Nicholas and Rockcastle counties.

Two double-fatality crashes occurred in Kenton and Warren counties.

One motorcycle-involved fatal crash occurred in Madison County and the victim was not wearing a helmet. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in this crash.

Through August 7, 2011, preliminary statistics* indicate that 403 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is forty-six less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2010. There have been 320 motor vehicle fatalities and 175 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Twenty-seven of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Thirty-seven crashes involved a motorcycle and nineteen victims were not wearing helmets. Fourteen crashes involved an ATV and twelve of the victims were not wearing a helmet. Twenty-eight crashes involved pedestrians and two involved a bicycle. One crash involved a scooter and one involved a horse-drawn vehicle. A total of sixty-three fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
