Five Die On Kentucky Roadways over New Years' Holiday

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that five people died in four separate crashes on Kentucky roadways during the New Years' holiday period beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011 extending through Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 at 11:59 p.m.
All of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and two of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Harlan, Jefferson and Perry counties. The crash in Harlan involved the suspected use of alcohol.
One double-fatality crash occurred in Owen County.
Through Dec. 31, 2011, preliminary statistics* indicate that 715 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is 45 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2010. There have been 570 motor vehicle fatalities and 289 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Sixty-five of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Sixty-one crashes involved a motorcycle and thirty-four victims were not wearing helmets. Twenty-five crashes involved an ATV and twenty-one victims were not wearing helmets. Fifty-three crashes involved pedestrians and two involved a bicycle. Two crashes involved a scooter and two involved a horse-drawn vehicle. A total of one hundred twenty-one fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
