Ten Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Feb. 20 through Feb. 26)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that ten people died in ten separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Feb. 20, through Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012.
Eight of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and four victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Bell, Clay, Grayson, Hardin (2), Mason, Rowan and Taylor counties.
Two of the fatalities involved pedestrians and occurred in Floyd and Grayson counties.
Through Feb. 26, 2012, preliminary statistics* indicate that 89 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is 1 less fatality than reported for the same time period in 2011. There have been 79 motor vehicle fatalities and 43 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Eight of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Two crashes involved a motorcycle and one victim was not wearing a helmet. Two crashes involved an ATV and one victim was not wearing a helmet. Six crashes involved a pedestrian. Fourteen deaths have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
