KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release
Nine Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (March 5 through March 11)
Date of News Release: 03/12/12
(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that nine people died in nine separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, March 5 through Sunday, March 11, 2012.
All nine of the victims were traveling in motor vehicles. Seven were not wearing seat belts. Two of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol.
Single-fatality crashes occurred in each of the following counties: Allen, Breathitt, Graves, Hardin, Hart, Jefferson, Lewis, McCracken and Washington counties.
Through March 11, preliminary statistics* indicate that 116 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is five fewer than reported for this time period in 2011. Of the 104 motor vehicle fatalities, 60 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the two motorcycle fatalities, one was not wearing a helmet. One of the two ATV fatalities was not wearing a helmet. Eight pedestrians have been killed. A total of 18 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
