Eleven Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (June 11 through June 17)

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in eleven separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, June 11, through Sunday, June 17, 2012.
Seven of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and four victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Boone, Hardin, Jefferson, Laurel, Letcher, McCracken and Warren counties. The crashes in Letcher and McCracken counties involved the suspected use of alcohol.
There were four motorcycle involved fatalities that occurred in Fayette, Jefferson (2) and Perry counties.
Through June 17, 2012, preliminary statistics* indicate that 337 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is 44 more fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2011. There have been 278 motor vehicle fatalities and 158 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-two of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Thirty-one crashes involved a motorcycle and sixteen victims were not wearing helmets. Three crashes involved an ATV and two victims were not wearing helmets. Twenty-four crashes involved a pedestrian and one involved a bicycle. Fifty-eight deaths have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
