Date of News Release: 07/23/12

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Preliminary statistics* indicate that six people died in six separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 16 through Sunday, July 22, 2012.

Four of the fatalities were the result of motorcycle crashes. All four victims were not wearing helmets. One fatality was operating a moped. One fatality was a pedestrian.

Single-fatality crashes occurred in Clark, Fayette, Floyd, Knox, Marion and Marshall counties.

Through July 22, preliminary statistics* indicate that 414 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is 34 more than reported for this time period in 2011. Of the 331 motor vehicle fatalities, 186 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 47 motorcycle fatalities, 26 were not wearing a helmet. Two of the three ATV fatalities were not wearing a helmet. Thirty-one pedestrians, one bicycle rider and one moped/scooter rider have been killed. A total of 69 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
