Eight Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week
(July 18 through July 24)

Date of Release: 07/25/05

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that eight people died in eight separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 18 through Sunday, July 24.

Of the eight fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in two of the crashes and only one of the victims was wearing a seat belt. Two of the fatalities were riding motorcycles and neither was wearing a helmet. One of the fatalities was a pedestrian.

Two single fatality crashes were reported in Jessamine County. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Caldwell, Hardin, Jefferson, Letcher, Livingston and Webster counties.

Through July 24, 2005, a total of 494* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 10 less than reported for this time period in 2004. Two hundred and eighty-six of these 494 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
